College Saving in Michigan

The day has come: you find out you are pregnant. Different things start going through your mind and all kinds of decisions are being made. During this exciting time in your life, don't stop and miss out on one of the most important things you need to start planning on: your child's college education.

Do you need assistance with a college savings plan?
Contact a Financial Planning Professional at Cranberry Lake Financial to help you plan for college!

Michigan offers many different programs and strategies for saving money for college tuition, such as:

  • Michigan Educational Opportunity Grant
  • Michigan Advantage Consolidation
  • Michigan Education Trust
  • Michigan Education Savings Program
  • And more

It is never too early to start thinking about this sort of thing, even before your child is born! The more money you can stash away and the sooner you can start doing so, the better off you and your child will be in the long run. For Michigan residents, average tuition can be well over $6,000. This doubles for private institutions and is even more when a student is attending a Michigan college that is not a resident.

You can't always depend on scholarships, and loans are not always the best way to go. They are usually a last resort, and that is all they should be. Don't put yourself in debt when it would have been much easier to just save a little bit of money from each paycheck.

It is also not advised for your child to have to get a student loan as well; this just puts a financial burden on your child. You also don't want to put your child in the position of having to work full time in order to pay for tuition, this just puts stress on your child and increases their chances of dropping out.
