Retirement Planning
Facts and Statistics
Many Americans plan for retirement, but many may not plan
effectively. The number of people that are being covered
by employer pensions has been steadily dwindling. As of
2001, Only 12% of workers in the private sector had a pension
or retirement plan covered by their employer. That percentage
is down from 18% of workers only a decade earlier.

percentage of people who currently are saving for retirement
has stayed roughly the same. 68% of workers believe that
they will continue to work into retirement, but 40% end
up retiring early due to circumstances such as disability,
health complications, or being let go by the company.
These workers often find themselves in a difficult situation
if they have no properly prepared for retirement. About
40% of workers polled assumed that they would only need
less than 70% of their previous income in order to maintain
a comfortable lifestyle upon retirement. Yet, financial
planners project that most retirees will need up to 80%
of their previous income in order to meet their living
expenses.
